Many observers would agree that the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 has presented one of the greatest challenges to the rules-based international order that has organized world politics in the post–Cold War Era. Vladimir Putin's military assault on Russia's independent neighbour has exposed one of many drastically different visions of how the contemporary world order ought to look. In effect, the Russian alternative to the rules-based international order is one that disregards international law, prizes zones of influence politics, and embraces annexation as fundamental building blocks for organizing world politics.
