South Africa’s colonial influence on literature is particularly apparent in the writings of white South African authors, who have lived, willing or unwilling, within the apartheid system. White writers living within the apartheid system received a western education in English, and as a result their works are found to not only be written in English, but to also exhibit heavy European literalistic influences. As a result, the writings of white South African writers has often been criticized for advocating colonialism. However, in an analysis of their masterpieces (Nadine Gordimer’s Conservationist, Andre Brink’s A Dry White Season, John Coetzee’s Disgrace), it can be seen that depending on the flow of the colonial history of South Africa, their works are at the forefront of efforts to inform the world of the evils of colonialism and the history of the oppression of blacks in South Africa. Furthermore, they present the potential for ethical society based on understanding and love for others.
